When going through tough times, we tend to push people away and isolate ourselves. While there are some benefits to spending time by yourself, spending too much time in isolation can make it harder to release those heavy thoughts.

Connecting with others, asking for help, or even stepping up to help others can help you give you the boost you need to bounce back.

“One of the most important things you can do on this earth is to let people know they are not alone.”
― Shannon L. Alder

Inmates learn how to train dogs

The Pixie's Pen Pals program pairs inmates and shelter dogs to work together.

Inmates from the Beaumont Correctional Center in Virginia, United States work with a professional trainer and behavioral specialist to learn how to train and provide care for the dogs.

Due to overcrowding in shelter systems, dogs often face the risk of being put down. This program prepares the shelter dogs for adoption and also gives the inmates something positive to focus on.

The rescue dogs receive around-the-clock care until they are ready to be adopted.

"Teaches us, like I said, how to be patient and productive and just finally being able to do something good. There's not too many jobs while you're locked up that you feel good about doing," said Chance Whittington, inmate and trainer.

Museum of Lost Memories reconnects special memories with their long-lost owners.

Photos can transport you to a different world.

From big celebrations to everyday moments, photos capture the magical moments that you can hold on to for a lifetime.

David Gutenmacher has made it his mission to return neglected or misplaced family mementos to their owners.

Museum of Lost Memories is a digital collection of a vast range of uniquely irreplaceable experiences from all over the world, across time periods.

David finds VHS tapes, diaries, letters, and photo albums from thrift stores and flea markets and shares them online in hopes of finding the original owners.

People from all over the world interact on his Instagram page to uncover clues and help find out who these memories belong to.

"To be able to give back a family photo that might be one of the few memories of that person, it's really special," David Gutenmacher.

Woman gives donated flowers a new purpose.

Robyn Lieber takes donated flowers and carefully arranges them into beautiful bouquets that she calls, “twice-blessed bouquets.”

Robyn also adds personal touches by putting a handwritten note in each bouquet. She then hands out the flowers to seniors and strangers in Sioux City.

Robyn's bouquets bring a lot of joy to the residents of Charter Senior Living. Everyone who receives a bouquet from Robyn expresses genuine happiness.

“Well, I think it was something to look forward to and appreciate that. The shelf life of fresh flowers isn’t very long. To be able to be given twice makes it even more special," said Charter Senior Living Resident Carla MacFarlane.

Robyn's nonprofit Sweet like Honey focuses on simple, inexpensive ideas of how to show kindness & compassion to others.

This shelter celebrates empty kennels for the first time in 47 years.

The Adams Country SPCA said goodbye to 2023 on a high note as they celebrated a major milestone in their journey.

For the first time in nearly 5 decades, the animal shelter has empty kennels, an even more impressive feat at Christmastime. Normally, they have 25 dog kennels and 50 spaces for cats. But this year, the staff, volunteers and community stepped up even more.

"Our community stepped up once again! This is the first time in 47 YEARS that the Adams County SPCA is empty let alone at Christmas time, it is a true miracle!" the animal shelter wrote in a Facebook post.

Now, the shelter plans to pull animals from other overloaded shelters in Pennsylvania and help them get adopted to the right homes.

In 2023 at the Gettysburg, Pennsylvania facility, 598 animals were adopted and 125 strays were reunited with their owners.
