“Attitude is a choice. Happiness is a choice. Optimism is a choice. Kindness is a choice. Giving is a choice. Respect is a choice. Whatever choice you make makes you. Choose wisely.”
― The Light in the Heart
This week, we've collected some delightful stories about:
Lennon Saddlemire is a superfan of the varsity basketball team at Whitney Point High School.
Due to his disabilities, it’s hard for him to communicate, yet he is always present at every home game to cheer the team on.
He was expecting an Eagles hat for his 10th birthday so that he could wear it to the games.
To his surprise, players from the Whitney Point varsity basketball teams came together to throw a birthday party for him, bringing gifts and a signed basketball.
Lennon was thrilled to have received the birthday surprise of a lifetime.
“Just seeing how happy he is at basketball games, just watching us play really just made us feel like it was necessary for us to go support him on a big day,” said Senior Guard of the Whitney Point Boys’ Varsity Basketball Team Garrett Priscott.
Suni and the Seven Princesses, a group of South Korean women in their eighties, are gaining massive popularity due to their unique rap performances.
These women didn't have access to education in their younger years due to the Korean War. In 2016, they all took an adult education class to learn the Korean alphabet Hangul.
The group took an interest in learning rap after watching a rap performance on the internet. With the help of their Hangul teacher, they began writing rap songs about farm life.
This elderly rap group now performs in local towns and appears on TV shows as well.
Park Jeom-sun, a member of Suni and the Seven Princesses says, "I'm having fun learning to rap these days. We gathered at the community center and practiced rapping, and we got rid of dementia and became healthy. We have been invited to perform at many places. So we're very busy and doing very well."
These rapping grannies are doing a great job uplifting spirits, breaking stereotypes of aging, and fostering connection in their community.
Jefferson County Public Schools bus driver Larry Farrish Jr. shares a wholesome bond with his students. So when one of his students, Levi, a first grader didn't flash his usual bright smile, he immediately took notice.
The little boy told Farrish that he didn’t have pajamas for Pajama Day at school. Farrish could that tell participating in his school's dress-up day was a big deal for Levi. So right after completing his morning route, he bought several pajama sets for Levi.
He headed back to Levi’s school to gift him the pajamas.
This act of kindness made the day for Levi. His face lit up with joy as received his gift.
“They become my kids after they leave their parents,” Farrish said. “I make sure they get to and from school safe, but I also try to bring some type of joy to their lives.”
Both Gabe and Arielle are on the autism spectrum and while Arielle speaks, Gabe is nonspeaking. Despite facing difficulties with social interaction, Gabe and Arielle are able to understand each other well.
Developing a beautiful bond that transcends communication barriers, Arielle and Gabe connect through their love of music and concerts.
This duo expresses their admiration towards each other by picking up non-verbal cues like eye contact and facial expressions.
"When I'm with Gabe, I don't even think about other things", says Arielle.
Their special bond is a great example of the transformative power of genuine friendships.
