Hello and welcome back for another week of positive news and Uplifting Stories

"Try to be a rainbow in someone else's cloud." - Maya Angelou

Sometimes, our differences get in the way, which leads to misunderstandings, judgments, and biases.

But regardless of our backgrounds and identities, we're all human beings trying to do our best to navigate life. We need to look out for each other.

Every Monday, we bring you stories that remind us of the true spirit of humanity. Let's celebrate kindness, love, and empathy!

This week, we have stories about:

  • Actions of one person saved a neighborhood from going up in flames
  • A special 'Then vs. Now' picture that reminds us that dreams do come true
  • A young girl determined to make the most of her life despite her disability
  • Little kids support their beloved teacher as she battles cancer

A brave man quickly puts out a fire, saving the entire neighborhood

We've all witnessed the devastating impact of wildfires on Hawaii's Maui island.

Wildfires spread rapidly and can consume everything in their path.

Maui residents Steven and Jessica Pickering noticed a fire in the bushes near a house in Lahaina as they were trying to move to safety amid growing wildfires.

Not fearing the intense nature of wildfires, Steven stopped to save the house from burning down.

In this video, you can see Steven trying his best to single-handedly put out the fire.

He managed to save not only the house but the entire neighborhood. It goes to show the difference a single person can make!

The video ended up reaching the owner of the house that Steven saved. Drew Smith recognized the house when he saw the video. He even decided to put Steven and Jessica Pickering in his will!

Father and son recreate flight deck photo after 30 years

In a photo from 1994, sitting next to his pilot dad, Ruben Flowers's eyes are full of admiration.

He followed in his father’s footsteps and eventually became a pilot himself.

Now, thirty years later he was able to recreate the flight deck photo with his father, who was flying his final Southwest flight as Captain.

“It was a dream of mine to make it to this point to fly with my dad, it was probably my number one aviation goal,” says the younger Ruben Flowers.

The father and son duo flew together from Omaha, Nebraska to Chicago, Illinois.

“That was an awesome feeling,” says the older Flowers. “To look over there and see my son, next to me, for my last landing.”

Amputee determined to not let any obstacle crush her spirit

Life went to hard mode for 28-year-old Xiaoweng, who lost her left arm and left leg in a car accident three years ago.

From being in a coma to undergoing multiple surgeries and physical therapy, Xiaoweng's recovery journey has been quite challenging.

However, limited mobility doesn't stop this young girl from living life to the fullest. Xiaoweng was determined to walk again and explore new possibilities in her life.

"If I can get past this hurdle, I believe nothing else can hold me back."

Her determination paid off and how!

Now, Xiaoweng uses her experience to help others with disabilities by participating in charitable activities and singing at various events.

"Many feel better after chatting with me. Even if I'm able to influence only one person, I still think that it is meaningful to do so".

Students surprise assistant principal with a special show of support

Hundreds of students at Ray Childers Elementary, Hickory, North Carolina gathered to show support to their assistant principal, Jordan Ferrell, who had been battling breast cancer.

School nurse Heather Richard, along with the Principal Erin Wall meticulously planned the whole surprise and also arranged a visit from the Pink Heals North Carolina fire truck.

Pink Heals is a nonprofit that helps support cancer patients and their families.

The heartwarming sight of little kids, all dressed up in pink, lined around the fire truck and holding up encouraging messages made Ferrell emotional.

“It was overwhelming love. I feel so blessed, I feel so lucky. I really am, to be here.” Ferrell said.

“We are trying to teach them how to care for others and how to have that empathy,” Principal Erin Wall said.

The kids have been a source of support for Ferrell from the time she was first diagnosed in March.

She has since finished her chemo treatment and is now cancer-free.
